Introduction to Nerikomi with Eiko Maeda

Date: Sunday, November 23 2025

Time: 9 am - 4 pm

Age: 16+

Location: Feldspar Ceramics, 1390 Gerrard St East

About the workshop

In this workshop designed for experienced ceramicists, participants will learn how to mix coloured porcelain, construct pattern blocks, and use them to create small decorative dishes using the nerikomi technique. Nerikomi is a traditional Japanese hand-building method which involves stacking coloured clay together and slicing through in cross-sections to form small blocks. These blocks are then carefully pressed together to create repeating patterns and sliced into thin slabs. The slabs are draped over uniquely carved plaster molds to form intricately patterned vessels.

There will be a break between noon-1 pm for lunch. Light refreshments will be provided but participants are required to bring their own lunch.

Eiko Maeda graduated from Joshibi University of Art and Design in Tokyo, Japan. Eiko trained in ceramics at the Visual Arts Center in Montreal, and later learned nerikomi under Eiji Murofushi in Fuji, Japan. She is currently based in St. Catharines, Ontario.
